Examining Culture to Cultivate Cultural Humility & Competence
Tonight, April 14, 2021, 6:30-8:00 PM
Virtual, Zoom link HERE!

To eliminate disparities in delivering services and to have improved outcomes in the BIPOC communities, it is imperative to examine the cultural context within which these services are provided, the culture of the people receiving services, and the level of cultural awareness of the professionals delivering services. Participants will learn the definition of cultural competence and cultural humility with applicable examples of these concepts, examine why culture matters, and explore why cultural competence and cultural humility are salient to providing culturally appropriate and culturally relevant services that are inclusive and equitable within the BIPOC community. Emphasis will be placed on the need to move from cultural competence to cultural humility now and beyond COVID-19.

Youth, Vaping & Mental Health
Wednesday, April 28th, 12 to 1:30 PM
Free, Virtual workshop (This will be recorded.)

COVID-19 impacted the lifestyle of teens in many ways, but it did not decrease youth vaping. As Hennepin County schools return to in-person learning, now is the time to reinforce efforts to stop youth vaping in school communities. According to the 2020 Minnesota Youth Tobacco Survey, one in five high school students are using e-cigarettes. 70% of adolescent users reported one or more signs of nicotine dependence. This workshop will explore youth vaping trends & mental health conditions. Cory Cole, MPH, from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) will highlight e-cig trends, share finding from e-cigarettes or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) research, & discuss links of vaping & mental health conditions. A panel of Hennepin County school chemical health specialists will follow & share their experience working with youth, families & school.

Who should attend: Secondary school administrators, school resource officers, counselors, nurses, school-linked therapists, adolescent health professionals, activity/athletic leaders, & other interested community members.
